Stained Glass

Today’s homeowners are faced with the challenge of accessorizing their homes with pieces that match their decor, and making the most of their natural lighting.  Stained glass can meet both needs simultaneously, while adding a custom look to your home.  Below are some examples of our work, also available from the catalog.  The following services are available:

Craftsmanship.  Each piece is hand-made one-at-a-time, numbered, polished to a luster, and given a coating of wax to repel dust and retard oxidation.

Design.  In addition to items in our catalog, custom designs can be commissioned.  We will work with you to find a subject and color scheme to your liking, then reproduce it with lead came or copper foil.  Pieces can be fit to existing windows or openings in doors, etc.

Photo Reproduction.  In addition to our normal design services, we can even reproduce a photo or other image in stained glass.  (See example below.)

Restoration and Repair.  We also offer repair services from adding a border to complete releading (see examples below), replacing broken glass, cleaning, re-cementing, etc.

Frames and Light Boxes.  Frames are available in your choice of woods, style, and finish.  Pegged frames allow you to remove the frame at a later date without harming the piece.  Light boxes can be made to fit the frame and provide backlighting.

Original Pieces

Rose Mirror

Done in the Arts & Crafts style, this piece makes heavy use of geometric symmetry and an original Scottish Rose design.  Measuring 12¼"W x 18¼"H, this mirror looks especially good over a credenza or foyer table.

The lapped joints are really open mortise and tenons.  While extremely sturdy, the pegged frame disassembles for removal without harming the piece.  This would be useful for changing the frame or for mounting in a window or door.

Southwestern Mirror

Arts & Crafts Mirror

Done in the Mission style, this piece features Frank Lloyd Wright and Southwestern design influences.  Measuring 12¼"W x 18¼"H, this mirror also looks especially good over a credenza or foyer table.

The lapped joints are really open mortise and tenons.  While extremely sturdy, the pegged frame disassembles for removal without harming the piece.  This would be useful for changing the frame or for mounting in a window or door.

Prairie Clock

This Prairie-style clock is constructed of solid oak, and finished with oil and hand-rubbed paste wax.  The art-glass dial is in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, and is backed by a mirror to aid in viewing the time from any angle.

The clock comes apart like a Japanese puzzle box: there are no nails, screws, biscuits, dowels, hinges, or doors--two magnetic catches hold everything together.

This piece won a 1st-place ribbon at the 2003 San Diego Fair Student Showcase.

Transom Sunburst

This piece makes extensive use of bevels to achieve depth and add prismatic effects.  "Chinchilla"-pattern glass in the negative spaces evokes the heat waves radiating from the core.  The piece greatly reduces the searing effects of the Ramona summer sun, while adding a welcome artistic touch to an otherwise empty wall and window set.

The panel was set into a custom-made solid red oak frame--I actually made a bending box to curve the oak molding!

Privacy Panels

What started out as a privacy screen tuned into another piece of art in light.  The golden cross with purple inlay stands atop a brown hillside, while green pastures roll away to the horizon and the brilliance of the coming day.  The four panels add a great deal of color to the room during the day, and contribute to the beautification of the neighborhood in the evening.

Entryway Glass

This entryway panel also had its basis in privacy, so the glass used was translucent and textured.  The before and after pictures show how the panel transforms the space, bringing color into the foyer.  The detail pictures show the variety and color of flora and fauna in this design of over 500 pieces.  This panel measures almost ten square feet, and hides reinforcement in the copper-foil structure.  It was sealed into the sill behind the pre-existing dual-pane glass.

Wizard of Oz

This panel of Toto in a ruby slipper was made and donated for the silent auction at the MET production of The Wizard of Oz at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.  It measures 11" x 20", and was made so that the bottom plate could be personalized.  I hope to make more of these for MET and individuals for future shows.

Master Bathroom Doors

These double-swinging doors separate the (noisy) master bathroom from the master bedroom.  The hardware will allow both doors to lock at ±90º.

Since the giant sequoia design spans both doors, the inner frame members are made of an amalgam of wood and aluminum angle, which runs the length of both such pieces.  The aluminum adds rigidity to the doors to protect the intricate glass panels.  (See picture at right.)

The inner frame members are held in place by long screws through loose tenons.  The doors can be disassembled to remove the glass for repair, by removing the tenon screws and the small knobs that hold the push-bars to the wider outer frame members.

The panels were cut with a diamond ring saw and constructed using copper foil.  The doors are mahogany with cocobolo accents, and are finished with Danish Oil Finish and protected with wax.  The doors casings are also made of solid mahogany and finished similarly.

Restoration and Repair

Antique Windows

This set of three antique stained glass windows was removed by the owner after more than 50 years of external exposure.  All three required cleaning to remove paint and weatherstrip caulk.  The two smaller panels required rebordering, while the large panel needed complete releading.  All three were re-cemented, polished, and waxed, then given pegged,  blind mortise/tenon- jointed frames done in oak with walnut accents.  These were eventually installed side-by-side in front of a very large picture window (not the one shown).

Glass Panel Repair

This panel had a broken light which required replacement.  Glass matching is often as difficult as matching a furniture finish.  In this case the glass was clear and the match was unusually good.  The panel had some oxidation and was never sealed.  After the repair, I gave the panel a good brushing and coat of wax.  The new finish should last for many decades.

Custom Solutions

Front Door Inserts

These two beautiful glass panels were acquired by the customer.  To install them into their front doors, the top four panels of each door were removed.  The opening were insulated with a silicone sealant and the panels were mounted in place and sealed in with custom molding made to fit over the interior of the panel frames.  This molding was stained and finished to match the interior door color.

Not only do the panels complement the interior decor of this home, but they brighten up the foyer and adjacent spaces as well.  The effect was truly transformational.

All stained glass will be made to meet the exact customer specifications for design, function, and cost.  Child-size versions of adult furniture can also be made to match.

Due to the custom nature of all pieces of furniture and glass, the complexity of design and the bill of materials will determine cost, with fifty percent (50%) being due at the time the final design is approved.  The remaining fee will be due upon completion.
